The 10 Best coffee makers with grinder 2024

A hallmark of decent coffee is evenness and consistency.

Grinders are in charge of evenness of the main ingredient: ground coffee beans. By design, burr grinders are way more consistent than blades. This means that you should ALWAYS invest in a grinder if you have to decide between a coffee maker and a burr grinder.

But why settle for one when you have options to have both? Let’s take a look at a few we’ve tried out below.

As you go through the machine list, remember to focus on your preferences. Brew method, capacity, timer, milk frother, are some areas to name a few. Focus on your own coffee checklist as mine might be different from yours!

1. Breville The Barista Express

This espresso machine is close to my heart. I’ve trained 3 people on how to use this machine: 2 for home use, 1 for a (really) tiny shop!

It’s no surprise. This beast has a built-In conical burr grinder with adjustable grind size, digital temperature control, and built-in steam wand. It’s not lazy either, brewing fresh coffee grounds or pre-ground beans. It’s decently sized coffee bean hopper and water reservoir are perfect for home-use if you’ve got a family of caffeine fiends!

PROS (+)

  • Interchangeable baskets allow you to use pre-ground and freshly ground beans
  • Grind and temperature control allow you to explore your brew black or milky
  • Durable enough to support a tiny coffee shop (more on this below)
  • Neat design

CONS (-)

  • Steam wand is challenging to get used to if you’re not a pro
  • Challenging to create latte art when using pre-ground coffee because the crema is too bubbly
  • Tamper can be improved in terms of fit with the portafilter

The tiny shop I mentioned earlier, pulls in an average of 50 brews a day using this machine. While I wouldn’t recommend it for commercial use, It’s an interesting example as a testament to its durability and the quality of drinks it produces.

Temperature and grind size control are my favorite features on this machine. They also happen to be 2 essential variables when playing around with espresso, or any coffee!

Definitely my pick for espresso. Semi-automatic, reliable, and durable! Can you tell I’m a little attached to this beauty yet?

2. Breville BDC650BSS Grind Control

Breville has always been one of my favorite coffee machine brands to recommend for non-professional use. They usually release reliable coffee gear that understands which variables coffee lovers enjoy playing with.

The Grind Control fits this bill. With a useful LCD monitor that lets you mix and match grind size with cup servings, you can experiment with brew strength and grind size too.

PROS (+)

  • Programmable grinding and brewing
  • Multiple grind sizes available
  • Durable stainless steel carafe
  • Robust design

CONS (-)

  • Machine needs cleaning often
  • Incompatible with certain types of water

If you pass dense, under-roasted beans through the grinder, it will probably break down. If you wait too long to clear the burrs of residue from ground beans, you affect the rpm (revolutions per minute). If you grind too fine, the brew basket overflows. Ideally, you want to pair this machine with beans that are roasted to perfection, so you can grind, brew, and clean afterward with ease.

It’s useful to consider all reviews but if you re-read complaints with enough of an understanding of coffee and coffee machines, you quickly see some things people could be doing wrong without realizing. Always go for trusted brands. Breville is one of them for home-use.

3. Krups – Grind and Brew

The German kitchen appliance manufacturer is a staple in many home setups. Their website states that “Aesthetics and innovation are at the service of function”, which is certainly reflected in this coffee machine.

With a built-In conical burr grinder, three brew strength options working with grind settings, this brewer is highly functional. It’s also got a auto start feature and keep warm option.

PROS (+)

  • Conical burr grinder produces flavorful ground coffee with little retention
  • Can play around with brew strength and grind size
  • Programmable grinding and brewing
  • 2hr keep warm option

CONS (-)

  • Concerns over durability
  • Poor after-sales service
  • Difficult to source replacement parts

A conical set up has two cones on top of each other. From the bean hopper, coffee is directed at an angle as they go in between the aforementioned cones. The design allows for more consistency, lower rpm, and, therefore, less heat generation. Easier clean up as well, so just grind, brew, and reset.

Flat burrs need more rpm to grind the same amount, which generates more heat. Both are in the burr grinder category, and both are way better than blade grinders.

One thing to look out for with this option is durability. Expect options at this price range to last around 2 years with proper use and maintenance. Every day past the 2-year mark is a gift.

4. Krups – Personal Cafe

Ever heard the term “you get what you pay for”? This is the embodiment of it. Nonetheless, its got a Built-In stainless steel burr grinder, can brew freshly ground or pre-ground coffee beans and is easy to clean.

PROS (+)

  • Aesthetically pleasing and space-saving
  • Can be disassembled and cleaned easily
  • Reliable coffee brewer

CONS (-)

  • Uneven grind
  • Grinder is underpowered
  • Durability of the grinder is a significant concern

At this wallet-friendly price point, you have to use the best beans that aren’t lightly roasted (to minimize density). You also have to use mineral water and plug the machine into a voltage regulator if you value low maintenance.

While this is an option if you want to experience space-saving money-saving, it could be a short-term win.

When it comes to equipment I use in making my cup of Joe, I always invest in pieces I can use forever. So this isn’t the direction I’d personally go in. But that’s just me and my coffee requirements. See how it fits in with yours!

5. Cuisinart DGB-850

If it fits your coffee requirements, this is a good pick up at its super-budget price point. Being easy to clean, with programmability and a large 12 cup brew capacity it does the job.

PROS (+)

  • Space-saving, functional design
  • Programmable grind and brew function
  • Decent capacity within an ergonomic footprint
  • Easy-to-clean design

CONS (-)

  • LCD screen is small compared to the features it has
  • Poor internal design tends to add water to the grinder after brewing
  • Filling the water tank needs a bit of pouring skill

Some of the issues outlined by others are valid, although I’ve found some workarounds. For example, moisture issues in the grinder after brewing don’t happen if it’s not over-filled. The grounds have to be the correct size as well as not to clog the filter. These are some common mistakes when people grind and brew coffee at home.

A lot of people don’t put too much thought when they grind. Brew processes are examined more. However, especially with home machines like this, some preventive measures and studying are required to prolong your coffee maker’s life with grinder setup.

6. De’Longhi ESAM3300 Super Automatic

Before trying this machine out, I noticed so many positive reviews (way more than the usual), which piqued my interest. As a professional barista, I am not a fan of fully automating espressos. Most people will have different views on this.

Nonetheless, this fully automatic espresso machine brews shots quickly and effectively. It’s got the ability to froth milk for cappuccinos and its easy to maintain too.

PROS (+)

  • Fully-automate your espresso routine
  • Save time and skill in having your milk steamed for you
  • Freshly ground coffee for espresso is the ideal setup
  • Built-in grinder

CONS (-)

  • Less capabilities to play around with different espresso recipes
  • Complaints on after-sales service
  • There seems to be a difference in build-quality (more on this in a bit)

And while there isn’t much space to play with in terms of temperature and beverage type, it satisfies specific needs perfectly for some people.

A small heads up, though. In the process of researching reviews of this machine, it performed so well that it had many repeat buyers of the same model as long as 7 years after the first one effectively died a natural death. Most of the negative complaints are towards these “newer” models.

It might be something worth looking into if you’re seriously considering this option. However, other than that, if fully automatic espresso machines are your best choice when you brew coffee, this is as solid a pick as any. As biased as I am against fully automatic, this is one of the best coffee makers out there, which does the work for you.

7. Capresso CoffeeTeam

A great pick for those who need a medium sized coffee maker grinder combo. The 10-cup capacity fits the more typical range of demand in a household or office setting.

It’s got a built in conical burr grinder, includes a di dishwasher-safe, reusable gold-tone filter and has a programmable grind and brew time.

PROS (+)

  • Built-in grinder is decent for the price.
  • Programmable grind and brew make it ideal for certain home coffee routines
  • Easy-to-clean filter basket is a bonus

CONS (-)

  • Difference in build quality for the newer models
  • LCD isn’t big enough to fit all info on features
  • Issues with button quality

Capresso has been known for quality and reliability, and this machine is one of their classics in home brewing.

Again it’s curious to note that this coffee maker has many repeat buyers. However, same as the machine before this, a number of those repeat buyers complained about their “new old” grinder-coffee makers.

If you believe that you make your own luck and know enough about coffee to have preventive measures, this is a cool option for the price it’s sitting at.

8. Gaggia Brera Super Automatic Espresso Machine

Fully automatic espresso machines make life easier – when they work perfectly.

At the end of the day, it’s about knowing your preferences and knowing your machine’s capabilities. There is no secret in choosing coffee makers with grinders. It’s all about knowledge, familiarity, and compatibility. Gaggia’s entry on this list is in the fully automatic aka all done for you category.

PROS (+)

  • Steam wand is easy to clean since it is also the hot water dispenser
  • LCD shows all need-to-know info at a glance
  • When working perfectly, your espresso routine is done with literally the push of a button
  • Steam wand can make lattes as well

CONS (-)

  • Issues with temperature stability
  • Some types of beans are too dense or too oily for the grinder to go through
  • Consistency of the milk and shots have been problematic for some

The steaming quality is decent as you can distinguish between a cappuccino and a latte based on recipe and foam. Espresso quality is about what you’d expect from a machine at this price range.

Perhaps the most significant cause for concern is that the grinder side of it is a bit fussy with beans universally. Due to the sheer amount of times that it’s been brought up in forums, it isn’t an isolated issue.

However, it is pretty hard to get over the design and the hot water dispenser as it can triple the added function of the machine: grinder, coffee maker, and hot water dispenser for tea.

Check out our Brera super auto review to learn more about this pick.

9. Black + Decker 12-Cup Mill and Brew

The grinder-to-brew basket design was created for a very particular type of coffee drinker. Someone who wants a simple and easy brew. Wth no bells and whistles. This is why it works perfectly for some and annoys others to death.

Nonetheless, it’s got your bare minimums. Including a grinder, adjustable brew strength, 24 hr programmability and it’s easy to maintain.

PROS (+)

  • Simple design, nicely sized buttons
  • Highly customizable options for brewing
  • Programmable feature is convenient
  • Grinder-brew basket design allows for a different but simpler (in some aspects) reset

CONS (-)

  • Bit hard to brew one cup after the other due to design
  • LCD is limited in info
  • Some issues with durability

This is an important feature to point out as you select the best coffee makers with grinders for you. It’s always between you and how you brew. Coffee maker specifics will follow suit.

So for this coffee maker from Black + Decker, all you need to do is pour water, grind, and it brews straight-away! If that sounds like you, given the price it’s at, this could be your potential steal pick.

10. Cuisinart Perfectemp

Disclaimer: This brewer doesn’t have a grinder, but it’s cheap enough to leave you with enough spare for a decent burr grinder nonetheless. It’s included because it makes a great cup of Joe at it’s value price point!

PROS (+)

  • Warming plate can be turned on/off
  • Brew strength control lets you adjust based on beans, recipe
  • 24-hr programmable
  • Can choose if you want coffee warm or HOT

CONS (-)

  • Build quality
  • Cleaning reusable filter

Now let’s get to it. Cuisinart is an established brand, who are known for its functional and innovative design.

The Perfectemp coffee maker makes it onto my list because at its budget price point, you still get a variety of decent features and freshly ground beans for astonishingly good value. Enough room in your budget for a grinder!

Programmable brew time, brew strength, auto-clean features make this machine simple to use. The auto shut-off feature, and the ability to switch the warming plate on or off are extra capabilities that allow you to make your coffee fit your day activities better.

The drawback? Build quality.

You definitely can’t have it all. It isn’t the sturdiest, and you will have to take extra care when you grind, brew, and operate around the machine.

Grind and Brew Coffee Maker Buyer’s Guide

Still not sure about what type of coffee maker with grinder is best for you? Here are a few more pointers to help:

Burr VS Blade

Ideally, we break down whole coffee beans into even grounds so that it’s easier to extract flavor from them. How do we break them down exactly? By grinding.

Blade grinders have too much space between them. The beans have so much room to move around while they’re ground that the result is uneven.

Burr grinders are thicker. They are set at controlled distances for the beans to pass through, thereby making their size more uniform as they’re ground.

The more consistent the grounds are, the move even the extraction is. If the coffee grounds are uneven, no machine can save your cup of coffee. If one particle is a lot bigger than the next, extraction will occur at a variable rate. In short burr = good, blade = bad!

This is the secret of good coffee, and why a decent grinder is more important than a good machine.

Ceramic VS Steel

Given that burr grinders are best for coffee, what is there to discuss with ceramic vs steel?

Given that coffee comes in different roast levels, different densities, and different levels of oiliness, you need a material that suits your use. Both are identical at the start in terms of quality. However, depending on size, ceramic will typically outlast steel by a long stretch.

On average, ceramic will last 2-3x longer than steel burrs (if they’re the same size). So why do they use steel burrs in commercial set ups?

Due to the quantity of beans going through the grinders, there’s a higher risk of getting a stone or piece of glass or metal in the bean hopper. And while ceramic is harder than steel, it’s also more brittle. If burrs are chipped by even a little, it throws off calibrations and thus brew consistency.

Your grinder is a machine that is simple but still needs ample amounts of care. No single device or part can be considered the best. The best coffee makers are an entire setup! From the beans to the grinder, and finally to the espresso machine.

Espresso VS Drip

Both are brew methods and beverage types at the same time.

Espresso is made of finely ground coffee. It is brewed for 20-40 secs with a ratio of one part coffee is to two parts hot water. A special high-pressure machine brews espressos, and these are what we know as espresso machines.

Drip coffee is a process of brewing coffee that utilizes gravity, a paper/cloth filter, and medium-coarse ground coffee. For most, this is the best way to experience coffee as black. It is brewed with a ratio of one part coffee, is to two fifteen parts water. Machines that automate this process are much simpler.

Espresso can serve as a base for so many beverages! These are the staples for most drinks in coffee shops. They’re fast to do and can cut through so many other ingredients.

Drip coffee is pretty straightforward: black or with a splash or two of milk. Each brewing process has its pros and cons. For the machine selections reviewed above, see which ones will make you your ideal cup of coffee every day.

The Final Verdict

As a coffee professional, my top pick is the Breville Barista Express. I get to play around with my espresso-based recipes. If I miss pour overs, I can manually make them using something else or settle for an Americano/Long Black. I’ve come across 3, and know for sure that it’s a reliable machine.
