Why Low Acid Matters for Your Stomach

Our stomachs are all unique and to put it plainly, some of us just suffer when it comes to regular coffee. This is because when it comes to handling acidity, one stomach may be more sensitive than another. 

A commonly associated problem is acid reflux. This is a condition where acid flows back up into your mouth after consumption (yup it’s as great as it sounds..). It’s often accompanied by pain in the lower chest and can in some cases be triggered by consuming coffee.

This is because different types of coffee have varying levels of acid and caffeine. And when you have a sensitive stomach, the high acid level can give some of us digestive problems, heartburn and make us feel generally uncomfortable.

Sadly, there’s no way to make coffee without acid (acidity is what makes your brew taste good, and there are more than thirty kinds of acid in coffee).

Nonetheless, some coffee brands have come out with low acid coffees so that people who are more sensitive to regular java can painlessly enjoy the magical elixir we treasure, all without paying for it with an upset stomach.

Their Medium Roast coffee beans are 100% arabica and grown in Central America. Nicaragua to be exact, the country produces high-quality coffee and Lifeboost fits the bill exceptionally well with this bag of wonder!

It’s fair to say that the high quality of their coffee can be attributed to the naturally nutrient-rich volcanic soil, cool climate, and moisture in these areas.

Volcanica’s Geisha is a delicate single (Costa Rica) origin low acid coffee, with aromas of flowering grass and lavender. Its medium roast gives the coffee a deep cocoa finish, along with a hint of molasses.

Sounds dreamy right?

While it’s made from coffee grown in Costa Rica, the name “Geisha” actually comes from the town of Geisha in Ethiopia, where the original variety originated from before being exported to be grown globally. It’s established as a coffee with low acidity, and silky mouthfeel.

The beans are then medium roasted to highlight aromatic notes of brown spice and cocoa. Medium roasting tends to bring out sweeter and more roasty flavors, with notes of chocolate, caramel and brown sugar. But this one still manages to retain its winey, dried fruit flavor as typical with beans from the region.

More generally, Indonesian coffee is recognized for low acidity, and it’s often used to temper and blend with other coffees from South America in an effort to rebalance the higher levels of acidity.

Additionally, the way these beans are processed also contributes to its low acidity. Being semi-washed, or “wet-hulled”, the process results in low acid coffee with more intense flavor and a fuller body.

The end result is a well-balanced cup of coffee with a heavy body, earthy character, and a clean finish followed by an intense syrupy aftertaste. And this coffee’s low acid properties allow you to fully enjoy the depth and complexity of every cup.

5. Cafe Don Pablo

If you’re not one to mind taste so much for as long as it is healthy, then Puroast’s Organic French Roast Coffee may be the best low acid coffee for you. There’s no denying that its purported benefits are pretty incredible, and it might even be a more balanced alternative than green tea.

The only problem with it is that it has quite a shallow flavor profile, and doesn’t have the same intoxicating aroma that other coffee beans on this list have. A Buyer’s Guide for Low Acid Coffee

If you’ve ever drunk a cup of joe and felt uneasy, had digestive issues and the like it’s probable that you’re sensitive to the levels of acid in the coffee.

Fear not, low Acid Coffee is a very real and tasty option which rivals more acidic coffees.

Since you’re here, you likely have some questions about how to differentiate between the options, but first what the heck is acidity in coffee anyway?

Acid vs Acidity

If you’ve been a discerning coffee customer for some time, you’ll know that acidity is often talked about in coffee as a reference to flavor. Words like “bright” or “fruity” indicate a “pleasant sourness”, similar to the sourness found in fruits.

The more acidity coffee has when used in this context, the more complexity it has as well. Complexity in the flavor of coffee is often a good thing.

Whereas if pH of your brew tilts above 5 it can make it difficult to digest for some of us. This is because the acid present in the beans irritates the stomach and can cause other downstream issues such as heartburn. This is exactly what you’ll want to avoid if you have a sensitive stomach.

High Acid Coffee can Punish Sensitive Stomachs

Coffee contains more than thirty different kinds of acid. And the complexity and strength of these acids vary from one variety of beans to another. But some beans contain so much acid that they can mess with the digestive harmony of your stomach.

Though the body is built to withstand an increased level of acidity, some stomachs are more sensitive to this than others.

When your stomach contents tip into becoming too acidic, it can cause you to regurgitate your stomach’s contents up to your oesophagus. People with acidity problems are familiar with this phenomenon, and it is known as GERD (acid reflux).

Highly acidic food and beverages can also wear down your teeth. They can cause them to become discolored and even cause decay.

Defining Acid Levels in Coffee Beans

As touched on earlier, the pH scale is used to indicate the strength of an acidic or alkaline solution. The scale runs from 0 to 14, with good old water having a neutral pH of 7. Anything lower is acidic, and anything higher is alkaline.

The average cup of coffee will have a pH of around 5. This is more acidic than green tea (which is closer to 7 on the pH scale), and less acidic than most fruit juices (around 2 to 3 on the pH scale). If you have a stomach that’s sensitive to acidity, you should look for low acid coffee brands and, when possible, the pH level.

A pH level of around 6 or higher, such as that of Lifeboost Medium Roast Coffee, is generally considered a low acid level and should be safer to consume.

But most of the time, roasters don’t indicate the pH level of their coffee. So unless you’re buying from specifically low acid coffee brands, there aren’t any practical ways to find out if your coffee will make you feel queasy.

The Effect of Roast Profile and Elevation on Acid Levels

The roasting process can play a role in how acidic your coffee turns out. Roasters roast anywhere from medium to dark in order to get rid of acidic compounds in coffee. The downside here is that as the coffee roasts darker, it loses more of its acids. And as it loses more acids, its unique flavor profile usually goes down the pipe along with them.

But regardless of how a bean undergoes the roasting process, this isn’t as effective as finding coffees grown at lower elevations and in the right soil. All things being equal, coffee grown at lower altitudes generally has lower acid levels than coffee grown at higher altitudes. So knowing where your beans are from can also give you a heads up as to if your coffee will give you digestive hell.

Now, in reality, you might end up buying a random bag of beans you haven’t tried or read much about before. Let’s say you’ve already bought these beans and they end up being too acidic for your liking. That’s tough luck. But is there anything you can try so that both your wallet and your stomach don’t miss out? 

Yes, there is and it’s super easy to make…

Cold Brew for the Win

Whenever you find coffee beans too acidic for your liking, you can either give them away or throw them away right? Nope..Turning them into a cold brew is the first thing I try before I even consider giving them away.

As the name suggests, cold brew is a brewing method that does not make use of heat in the extraction of coffee. Instead, it relies on a much longer brewing time to extract flavor and caffeine. Because of this, it does not break down a lot of the acidic compounds, especially those contained in the oils of the coffee bean.

The result is a coffee which is lighter on your stomach but with elevated caffeine content.  This is especially worth it if you just want to enjoy great-tasting coffee beans that are far too acidic when you brew them any other way.

The Verdict

Coffee’s effects vary from one person to another. Some people are more sensitive to higher levels of acid than others. If only it were possible to have great-tasting coffee without any acid at all!

But the list of different coffee brands and the variety of coffees, flavor profiles and acid levels is endless.
