Lido 3 Grinder 2020 Review

The Lido 3 by Orphan Espresso, or OE for short, is a beast. Housed within it’s heavy-duty, BPA free plastic walls lie a set of 48mm swiss made steel burrs. That’s right— 48mm burrs…in a hand grinder!

The newest incarnation of the OE Lido takes its design from its big sister, the OE Lido 2. With the same stable conical steel grinding burr set and the same 70g bean capacity, the Lido 3 hand grinder is designed as a travel grinder.

PROS (+)

  • Stable grinding axle for ultimate grinding stability.
  • 70g food safe BPA free plastic hopper.
  • Large 48mm swiss made steel burr set.
  • Stainless steel catch jar.
  • Foldable diecast aluminum crank handle with integrated funnel
  • Includes carrying case, anti-static brush, and hex assembly tool.

CONS (-)

  • Bigger than most travel options.
  • Feels less premium than other grinders in the price range.
  • Not the best for espresso.

The OE Lido 3 manual coffee grinder is slimmed down from the Lido 2, ready for life on the road.

It has a diecast folding crank handle, a more lightweight build, a steel catch jar, and it comes with a Neoprene carrying case, an anti-static natural bristle brush, and a hex assembly tool for easy maintenance.

Nonetheless, it still has a capacity availability of up to 10 tablespoons of coffee beans.

Why the Lido 3?

The Orphan Espresso Lido 3 manual coffee grinder is an excellent all-around grinder as far as performance is concerned. This coffee grinder features a set of stainless steel burrs that are stabilized at both the top and the bottom of the grinder.

What this means is that there is almost zero movement of the burrs while you are grinding. With burrs as stable as those in the Lido 3, grind consistency is incredibly good, especially for the price.

If you are looking for a coffee grinder built to travel that also does well at home, the Lido 3 is a solid choice. It will achieve any grind size you need it to, quickly and easily.

Build Quality and Materials list

First let’s take a look at the OE Lido 3 materials list. This hand coffee grinder features a high capacity food safe, BPA free plastic hopper, and a stainless steel coffee grounds catch jar.

On top of the large-capacity food-safe hopper, there’s a foldable aluminum handle with an integrated funnel for effortless loading of coffee beans.

Inside, the OE Lido grinder sports a stainless steel conical grinding burr set. Grind settings are taken care of by an aluminum grind adjustment ring.

Up to 70g or 10 tablespoons of coffee beans can be loaded into the bean hopper. This size is great for those wanting to brew a large amount of coffee.

Thanks to the stainless steel burr set, and the Lido’s dual bearing axle system, the Lido 3 manual coffee grinder chews through coffee faster than its competition.

Grinding Burr Set Diecast

Using a steel conical grinding burr set, the Lido 3 can produce grinds for any brew method. From Turkish grind size through to French press and cold brew.

The OE Lido 3 makes things a little easier than most with a bearing axle system. This bearing system aids smooth turning of the handle and means that the burrs stay stable, making Lido’s grind even and consistent even on coarse French press settings.

The grind is adjusted via an aluminum ring housed above the coffee grind anti-static catch jar. One aluminum ring changes the particle size, and the other locks the burrs in place. With step-less grind adjustment, it is possible to fine-tune to the exact grind size you need.

Durability

The OE Lido manual coffee grinder really is built like a tank. With a large capacity food safe BPA free plastic body, rigid aluminum crank handle and adjustment rings, and a stainless steel burr set, the Lido 3 can take a beating.

Combine this with the steel catch jar and included case, and you’ve got yourself a grinder that will survive any backpacking trip.

To top it off, the team at OE are known for their solid customer service. They offer replacement parts at a reasonable price if something does go wrong. Thanks to the easy disassembly process, you, as the customer, can make any changes necessary using the tool provided.

Ease Of Use

With large stainless steel burrs and a dual axle bearing system, the OE Lido 3 manual coffee grinder glides through coffee faster than most manual options on the market.

Aside from speed, OE has thrown in a few nice features that make the Lido manual coffee grinder super easy to use.

The smooth grip tinted hopper makes it easy to hold while grinding, and the handle with an integrated funnel for easy bean loading is godsent. The catch jar is a good size for dispensing coffee into either a V60 or a portafilter.

OE has also made the disassembly process and cleaning incredibly easy. They ship the Lido with its hex tool and anti-static natural bristle brush.

You have everything you need to clean and maintain your grinder right there in its case.

Pricing

With so many excellent manual coffee grinding options on the market, is the OE Lido 3 manual coffee grinder a good choice for its price? Is it worth the hefty price tag?

If you are looking for a high capacity manual coffee grinder that produces excellent quality grind, then the OE Lido offers superb value for money.

It produces an even particle size, perfect for anything from espresso to French press, and is built to last.

Lido Alternatives

Let’s be honest, the OE Lido 2 and 3 are big boys. If you’re looking for a smaller grinder that still has a large bean hopper, check out the Hario Skerton

If you’re not into the plastic hand coffee grinder thing and would prefer all-metal, check out the Timemore C2 or G1. Both are constructed of aluminum and feature similar bearing systems for good grinding stability.

Don’t Buy the Lido 3 If..

If you are an ultra-lite traveler, the OE Lido isn’t for you. Best go with the tiny and compact Porlex Mini. It fits in an AeroPress and grinds very well for its size and price.

If you love form as much as function, you probably won’t be stoked on the OE Lido 3. While its burrs and catch jar are stainless steel, the hopper is plastic and therefore doesn’t feel as good in the hand as something like the Timemore G1.

The Final Verdict

The Lido 3 by Orphan Espresso is a premium hand grinder that is built to last. This grinder features a 48mm stainless steel burr set that cuts through coffee faster than most manual coffee grinders for a similar price.
